CHNOS Elemental Analysis

Carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, oxygen and sulfur are the basic elements of living nature. Their quantitative determination within the most versatile combinations and substances is the origin and essence of the ELEMENTAR manufacturing program.

Through quantitative high temperature decomposition, solid or liquid substances are changed into gaseous combinations. The gas mixture is cleaned, separated into its components and through efficient detectors determined with a precision and accuracy of up to 0.1% relative.

This wide range of applications with universal as well as special instruments is only achieved by ELEMENTAR. It has long since surpassed the classical applications from organic chemistry and pharmaceutical analysis, moving into the control of industrial products, geology, agriculture, environment protection, biotechnology, carbon and mineral oil analysis as well as authenticity and origin analysis.

Water and environmental analysis

In general a multitude of applications with elemental analyzers are found in the field of environmental analysis. However, the organic carbon content in drinking water, waste water and other types of water is gaining more importance for basic screening as well as an indicator for water quality. In addition to the measurement of total organic carbon (TOC) ELEMENTAR analyzers can also simultaneously measure total bound nitrogen (TNb) in these same samples which is important environmentally. ELEMENTARs TOC/TNb analyzers are suitable for the entire range of applications from part per billion levels for injectable pharmaceutical water, over drinking and sea water, to high salt containing samples (brine) to industrial effluents, seawages and sludges. Other types of carbon determination such as total inorganic carbon (TIC), purgable organic carbon (POC/VOC) are also possible. A strength of Elementar's analyzers is the determination of TIC, TOC and TC in solids. A wide spectrum of solids modules from low costs solutions to fully automated sample feeders of high performance offers the right solution for every application and every budget.

Agrarian Analysis

Living nature consists of the elements C, H, N, O and S. ELEMENTAR is the specialist for analysis of these elements. Therefore, the majority of our analytical instruments can also be used for the investigation of plant material, soils, fertilizers and all kinds of organic samples and/or biomass. The basis is in each case the ability to analyze representatively large sample quantities without special pretreatment and without use of decomposition chemicals safely and within minutes. ELEMENTAR is the pioneer of the Dumas combustion analysis for the determination of N/Protein from macro samples into the gram range, which currently replaces more and more the wet-chemical Kjeldahl method. Instruments for the analysis of the CN as well as CNS contents are indispensable in plant and soil research. The coupling of Elementar analyzers and mass spectrometers for the measurement of isotope ratios (IRMS) is also of great importance for tracing and origin analysis. ELEMENTAR is the only company to offer IRMS systems for macro analysis.

Solid Fuel analyzers

The analysis of CHN and S is a standard technique for caloric determination and environmental compatibility of fossil fuels such as coal, coke and peat as well as for regenerating raw materials such as biomass or combustible garbage. Elemental analyzers of ELEMENTAR are characterised by a large sample size and large concentration range. Therefore, they are especially suited for the safe analysis of inhomogenous substances such as solid fuels.

The vario EL analyzer can analyze as much as 30 mg absolute carbon, which is the largest of any CHNS simultaneous analyzer. The macro analyzer vario MACRO CHN is comparable to the vario EL regarding sample handling but allows the simultaneous CHN analysis of more than 100 mg coal. The vario MAX CHN is the first analyzer for fuels with open, re-usable sample crucibles and can accomondate sample weights of up to 200 mg coal

Special Elemental Analyzers

The original application of organic elemental analysis was to determine the elemental composition of pure materials for molecular structure determination. Today, however, applications for organic elemental analysis extend far beyond the classical organic chemistry tasks. Analysis of soils, plant tissue, and materials for quality control determination are common. Determination of isotopic ratios, trace levels of sulfur and nitrogen in fuels or the analysis of halogen or phosphorus containing compounds add new challenges for the elemental analyzer.

Elementar has, in addition to the universal elemental analyzers, developed instruments which utilize special detection techniques which are optimized for special and important applications.
